"Porky Pig and the Mouse of Monte Cristo" ( Dell, November 1952)

Throughout the 1950's, the Western Publishing writers really seemed to enjoy putting Porky Pig in weird adventure stories. This was especially true in Porky's self-titled issues, like this one from 1952: "Porky Pig and the Mouse of Monte Cristo". It's not only longer than most Looney Tunes stories of the time, it's also weirder! Here we have Porky as a handyman hired by a rat who looks like Hubie, posing as the Mouse of Monte Cristo (a mouse who looks like Bertie) to build a brick wall to cover up a doorway. I won't give away the plot, but key elements include a giant cat named Satan and grapes drugged with a sleeping potion.

  2. I’m not at all sure how to follow the last comment – but (as I was originally going to say) stories like THIS are what truly separated the Western Pub. Warner comics (and those for Disney, Lantz, etc.) from any others.

I can only assume the proliferation of “funny animal adventures” in the Dell and later Gold Key comics were spun off from the adventure continuities of the Floyd Gottfredson Mickey Mouse comic strip, which were reprinted in the earliest issues of WALT DISNEY’S COMICS AND STORIES.

I was wondering if and when you were going to offer up an example of an adventure story. Glad you picked a good one. I also liked how the “last line” was reflective of something that would be found in a Warner cartoon.

  3. Also, when Gold Key chose to revive the PORKY PIG title (most likely to coincide with the ‘60s PORKY PIG TV show on ABC) a reprint of "Mouse of Monte Cristo" was what they chose to lead off with.

  4. There's one called "Porky Pig and the Isle of Missing Ships" in which Porky and Sylvester solve an almost Scooby-esque mystery. I plan on posting that one in the future!
