Since you readers seemed to like my trial run of taking a look at a full issue of a comic on video, here's a look at one of my favorites, and one many of you have requested that I do a post about. It's issue 375 of DC Comics' "Looney Tunes", a full-issue masterpiece by Dan Slott and Dave Alvarez.
Welcome to Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies Comics. On this blog, we'll be taking a look at the overlooked side career of the Warner Bros. cartoon characters. Though beloved and celebrated on theater and TV screens for generations of fans, Bugs Bunny and his cartoon cohorts have also had an equally lengthy career in print.

"Looney Tunes" (Dell) #243, January 1962: "Beep Beep Run"
Here's a nicely drawn short story with Wile E. Coyote, "Beep Beep" the Road Runner and the Road Runner's 3 rhyming kids. Art and story (most likely) by Phil DeLara and Mike Maltese.

"Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies (Dell) #19, May 1943: "Beaky Buzzard vs. Desperate Dan"
Let's give the writer and artist who cooked up this tale a hearty round of applause. It's a cliche as old as time: gang of outlaws starts trouble in lawless Western town, mysterious stranger comes along, becomes the new sheriff in town and thwarts the bad guys.
Of course, usually in this scenario, the hero is dashing, daring, mysterious and tough as nails. Usually, he's smart, too.
But what would happen if the hero was a complete idiot, succeeding only by sheer naivete and dumb luck? Aw, what the hell, let's take him down another notch. What if he was Beaky Buzzard?

"Bugs Bunny's Vacation Funnies" (Dell)# 5, 1955: Henery Hawk and Foghorn Leghorn: "Hero For A Day"
In answer to a question about the last Foghorn Leghorn story I posted, the earliest appearance of Foghorn in the Dell comics is this one from "Bugs Bunny's Vacation Funnies" # 5, 1955. This is definitely the true Foggy and not Senator Leghorn. In the story, Foghorn wrongly suspects Henery Hawk of chasing hens, when Henery is only getting groceries for his mother. Much as he did in the cartoons, Foghorn's role in the Dell comics was to protect a chickenhouse from predators. as you can see, he was a little less tolerant of Henery's hijinks than he was in cartoons.
There's also a little game at the end with great artwork of the characters, including Miss Prissy, whom I've never seen in a Dell story.
